Football shirts are engineered to last – which is the opposite of what the industry wants. Joanna Czutkowna's viral soil burial experiment exposed the uncomfortable durability of synthetic match kits: a Manchester United jersey remained largely intact after a year underground, while natural fibres degraded. Cotton-polyester blends and polyester seams persist, making these garments environmental slow-burners rather than quick-decomposing waste.
The contradiction is stark. Clubs and manufacturers have designed kits to withstand intense professional use, yet the commercial model demands constant replacement. Millions of shirts enter the waste stream annually – many within a season – while the materials themselves resist biodegradation. This creates a perverse outcome: durable products become waste problems precisely because they're durable.
Czutkowna's 20-year track record in textiles sustainability suggests the issue runs deeper than material choice. It's a system problem. Clubs market new designs relentlessly, sponsorship deals drive annual kit changes, and fans are conditioned to upgrade. The shirt that could last decades gets discarded because it's last season's.
Recycling infrastructure for synthetic textiles remains weak. Most football shirts end up in landfill or incineration. A handful of schemes collect worn kits for resale or shredding into industrial fibre, but adoption is patchy and volunteer-dependent. The industry lacks mandated take-back systems or extended producer responsibility.
The question isn't whether football shirts can be made more recyclable – it's whether the commercial system that thrives on their disposability will tolerate genuine circularity.
