Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) combines three objectives: increased productivity, enhanced resilience, and reduced emissions. For a company operating across multiple commodity value chains – ITC works in tobacco, agribusiness, hotels, paperboards, and packaging – the deployment challenge is significant. Scaling requires coordination across farmer networks, input suppliers, logistics, and procurement systems.
The India Landscape Accelerator brings together multiple companies (WBCSD member organisations) to pilot and standardise CSA approaches rather than run isolated projects. This model matters because fragmented implementation rarely moves the needle at sector level. Shared learning, common metrics, and peer pressure create conditions for real adoption.
What remains underspecified in this framing: which CSA practices ITC is actually deploying (soil conservation, crop rotation, agroforestry, water harvesting – these are different); how emissions reductions are measured and verified; whether the programme targets Scope 3 accountability or simply farmer-level resilience; and crucially, whether yield improvements or cost savings are driving farmer uptake or whether ITC is absorbing margin pressure.
The narrative around "scaling" often masks whether adoption is genuine behavioural change or transactional compliance. ITC's involvement suggests commercial viability – that's worth tracking.
