Thames Water's pilot scheme to inject treated sewage into the River Thames during drought has produced data the utility has not publicly disclosed: PFAS levels rose to 13 times the legal limit. The scheme is designed to draw tens of millions of litres daily from the Thames and replace it with recycled wastewater – a proposal the company has framed publicly as environmentally sound.
This discrepancy between what the data shows and what Thames Water has communicated represents a material failure in transparency. PFAS, known as "forever chemicals" because they persist indefinitely in the environment and bioaccumulate in human tissue, pose documented human health risks including thyroid disease, liver damage, and immune suppression. The legal limit exists precisely because exposure above that threshold carries measurable harm.
The pilot ran in south-west London. Thames Water has positioned this recycling scheme as essential infrastructure for managing future drought in a water-stressed region. That framing is not wrong – Thames Water does serve a densely populated area facing genuine water security challenges. But the claim that the scheme "will not harm the riverine environment" cannot credibly coexist with pilot data showing PFAS concentrations at 1,200% of acceptable levels.
This case illustrates why ESG reporting frameworks increasingly demand specificity on environmental remediation and why third-party verification matters. Thames Water's public statements were not technically false; they were incomplete in a way that materially altered the risk profile.
The question now: will the company retrofit its scheme to address PFAS removal, or proceed regardless?
