This matters because procurement teams increasingly demand carbon data from suppliers, yet lack standardised methods to validate it. EcoVadis's Data Reliability Level (DRL) framework attempts to categorise supplier data by confidence level, distinguishing between estimates, calculations, and measured outputs. The framework sits somewhere between full trust and dismissal – a pragmatic recognition that not all suppliers have the systems to measure emissions directly.
But here's the tension: a DRL rating is only as good as the auditing behind it. Without independent verification or third-party oversight, suppliers can game the scoring by cherry-picking favourable data or withholding operational detail. EcoVadis itself rates suppliers on sustainability performance, creating a potential conflict of interest if the same organisation both rates data reliability and influences commercial outcomes.
The real question isn't whether guidance exists – it's adoption. Will procurement teams actually use this framework to reject high-emission suppliers, or will it become another checkbox in vendor questionnaires? And will suppliers invest in better measurement systems if companies accept low-confidence data without penalty?
