Epoch, a supply chain intelligence platform, closed a $4.25 million funding round to help small and medium-sized enterprises navigate the EU Deforestation Regulation. EUDR requires companies placing certain commodities on the EU market to prove their supply chains are deforestation-free – a compliance burden that disproportionately affects SMEs lacking dedicated ESG infrastructure.
The regulation, which took effect in December 2024, covers beef, soy, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, and rubber. It mandates detailed due diligence documentation and traceability mechanisms, with penalties for non-compliance reaching 4% of EU turnover. For SMEs – particularly those in food processing, manufacturing, and retail – the operational and technical complexity is substantial. Many lack the systems to aggregate supplier data, map supply chains, or verify deforestation claims at scale.
Epoch positions itself as a bridge: automating compliance workflows, consolidating supplier documentation, and cross-referencing against satellite imagery and deforestation databases. This is not a nice-to-have. Without such tools, thousands of suppliers face either exclusion from EU markets or crippling compliance costs.
The funding signals investor confidence that compliance infrastructure for regulation-driven ESG will remain a growth market. It also reflects a gap in the market – most existing ESG platforms serve large corporates; smaller operators have been left to cobble together solutions from spreadsheets and consultancies.
But here's the tension: EUDR compliance often reveals supply chain fragmentation that money and software alone cannot fix. If a supplier's origin is genuinely unknown – or if deforestation occurred upstream – no platform resolves that. Epoch can surface the problem; sourcing teams must solve it.
