Greenly has acquired Normative, a carbon accounting software provider. The deal signals a consolidation trend across the carbon accounting market – smaller, specialised platforms are being absorbed into larger suites as organisations demand integrated emissions measurement and reporting.
This matters because carbon accounting remains fragmented. Most mid-market and enterprise organisations still cobble together multiple tools to track scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, reconcile data from dispersed sources, and prepare for regulatory disclosure. The acquisition suggests the market is moving toward bundled solutions that handle primary activity data ingestion, emissions calculation, science-based target alignment, and reporting readiness in one place.
But consolidation cuts both ways. Larger players can invest in data infrastructure, integrations with ERP and accounting systems, and compliance frameworks (GRI, CSRD, SBTi). Smaller, focused competitors lose pricing power and may see feature innovation slow. Organisations already locked into Greenly's ecosystem face reduced optionality; those still evaluating platforms should expect fewer independent vendors within two years.
The timing also matters. CSRD reporting begins in 2025 for large EU organisations, with scope 3 obligations kicking in progressively through 2028. Companies need assurance that their carbon accounting tool can handle evolving regulatory scope and methodology changes. A consolidated provider with resources to track regulatory shifts and update templates has an operational advantage.
What remains unclear: whether acquisition-driven consolidation actually improves data quality or simply concentrates vendor risk. Better platform integration doesn't guarantee better emissions science or more honest scope 3 estimation. Watch whether Greenly's post-acquisition roadmap prioritises accuracy standards over feature parity.
