Louisiana's Plaquemines LNG terminal is set to expand to become the largest liquefied natural gas facility in the US, backed by a fast-track permit from the Trump administration. The $18 billion project would more than double the terminal's current capacity. This represents a significant expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in a state already facing severe coastal erosion and sea-level rise – conditions that make large industrial projects increasingly vulnerable to climate impacts. The decision sits in direct tension with decarbonisation commitments: new LNG infrastructure locks in decades of gas extraction and consumption, precisely when energy systems need to transition away from fossil fuels. The timing is notable. Fast-track permitting during the Trump administration suggests regulatory pressure is being minimised, not maximised. Louisiana's coastline is among the most threatened in the US, with the state losing roughly one football field of land per hour to erosion and subsidence. Expanding infrastructure in this zone raises hard questions about adaptation strategy. Is the state investing in resilience measures proportional to the new industrial footprint? What happens to the terminal during the next major hurricane? The expansion also signals where capital is flowing. Investors and operators clearly believe LNG demand will remain strong enough to justify an $18 billion commitment. That bet contradicts net-zero scenarios from the International Energy Agency, which projects global gas demand peaks within this decade. The decision will likely face legal challenges from environmental groups concerned about methane emissions and climate impacts. But permitting speed – not environmental rigour – appears to be the operative principle here.
