This matters because most due diligence frameworks still rely on third-party auditors checking compliance paperwork. Workers themselves see wage theft, unsafe conditions, and coercion that don't show up in formal records. When companies build feedback channels into their supply chain processes, they catch violations earlier and build credibility with workers who have reason to distrust corporate investigators.
The practical tension is cost and scale. Large organisations with hundreds of suppliers can't conduct direct worker interviews everywhere. But selective engagement – focusing on highest-risk tiers, product lines, or geographies – shifts the balance. Some companies are embedding worker hotlines, SMS-based surveys, or partner NGO interviews into their verification cycles rather than treating them as supplementary.
But genuine worker engagement requires protection. Anonymous reporting tools help. So does making clear that participation carries no retaliation risk – and proving it through follow-up action. Without that, workers stay silent.
The EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive now requires member states to mandate human rights due diligence in supply chains. That rule doesn't specify how. Direct worker engagement isn't yet standard practice. The question isn't whether it works – it does. It's whether procurement teams will resource it.
