The problem: traceability stopped at visibility. Companies could tell you exactly which farm their cocoa came from without addressing whether that farm was converting forest. Knowing the source doesn't prevent the harm.
WBCSD's intervention here is timely. The conversation has stalled because the industry conflated tracking with transformation. Real deforestation-free supply chains require enforcement – not just documentation. Verification bodies need teeth. Suppliers need consequences for non-compliance, not just transparency requirements.
This pivot matters because regulation is tightening. The EU Deforestation Regulation and equivalent frameworks in other jurisdictions now demand proof of due diligence, not just traceability data. Companies that treated mapping as the endpoint will find themselves exposed.
What comes next: restoration commitments tied to supplier contracts. Measurable reductions in deforestation within supplier landscapes, not just individual properties. Third-party audit of conversion-risk zoning. Real-time monitoring using satellite data and ground truthing. Crucially, accountability that extends beyond the first-tier supplier to farms themselves.
The hardest part isn't technical – it's contractual. Brands must be willing to terminate relationships with suppliers who cannot demonstrate compliance. Most won't, because commodities are fungible and suppliers are interchangeable. That's the barrier traceability systems paper over.
WBCSD's audience – multinational commodity buyers – already knows this. The question is whether they'll act on it or whether "post-traceability" becomes another decade of incremental compliance theatre.
