EcoVadis and Novata are integrating their platforms to give companies and investors a clearer view of scope 3 emissions – the hardest category to measure and often the largest slice of a corporate carbon footprint.
Scope 3 covers everything outside direct operations: purchased goods, business travel, waste, employee commuting, end-of-life product use. Most organisations skip it entirely or estimate badly. The new partnership embeds EcoVadis's supplier sustainability data into Novata's private markets platform, letting investors and portfolio companies measure upstream and downstream emissions without starting from zero.
This matters because scope 3 represents up to 90% of total emissions for some sectors – consumer goods, retail, finance. Voluntary standards (GHG Protocol, SBTi) now require it, and EU regulations are tightening reporting rules. But data collection remains fragmented. Most companies rely on secondary data, industry averages, or supplier self-reporting – all sources of error.
The integration is practical: Novata's clients can access EcoVadis assessments of their suppliers' environmental performance, then cross-reference with scope 3 calculation tools. It doesn't solve the underlying data gap – suppliers still need to report – but it reduces duplication and flags which suppliers pose emissions risk.
Neither organisation has announced pricing, verification standards, or rollout timelines. The real test is adoption. Private equity firms already track ESG metrics to meet LP expectations; integrating scope 3 data into due diligence workflow is logical. But whether this partnership moves the needle on actual scope 3 measurement – or simply repackages existing estimates – depends on data quality inputs. Garbage in, organised garbage out.
