Fossil fuel emissions are amplifying El Niño weather patterns, according to new research. The current "Godzilla" El Niño event – potentially the strongest on record – is expected to peak later this year and could push 50 million people into acute hunger before the end of 2024.
El Niño is a natural climate oscillation occurring every two to seven years, when tropical Pacific waters heat up and trigger cascading weather disruptions globally. But the latest analysis concludes that recent decades of strong El Niño events have been intensified by planetary overheating from fossil fuel combustion.
This distinction matters. El Niño itself is not new; the climate system has cycled through these patterns for millennia. What's changed is the baseline temperature of the oceans and atmosphere. Burning coal, oil, and gas has raised that baseline, meaning each El Niño cycle now operates in hotter conditions – amplifying its effects.
The humanitarian stakes are concrete. Drought-driven crop failures, water scarcity, and heat stress compound in regions already vulnerable to climate shocks. Small island states, parts of Africa, South Asia, and Central America face disproportionate risk. The World Food Programme has already warned of famine conditions in multiple countries.
This research closes a gap in climate attribution science. It's one thing to say the planet is warming; it's another to connect that warming directly to observable, near-term weather extremes that displace people and destroy livelihoods. The fossil fuel industry has long relied on the complexity of climate systems to obscure causation. That becomes harder to sustain when El Niño itself becomes a vector for tracing human responsibility.
The question now: will insurers, governments, and agricultural sectors price this amplification into their planning, or continue acting as though El Niño operates in the climate of 1980?
