Slovakia, Austria and Hungary have all broken temperature records as extreme heat continues across central and eastern Europe. The Slovakian hydrometeorological agency recorded 42°C in Dolné Plachtince on Thursday – a new national high. The heatwave has triggered immediate operational impacts: Polish authorities shut down Kozienice and Połaniec power plants, signalling how climate extremes are now constraining energy supply in real time.
This matters to ESG professionals because it illustrates the material risk that physical climate hazards pose to infrastructure and operations. When a coal-fired power station closes because cooling water temperatures are too high, that's not a speculative future scenario – it's a present-day business continuity problem. European utilities and industrial operators face repeated seasonal shutdowns as demand for cooling water conflicts with environmental flow requirements.
For corporate risk officers, this highlights why Scope 3 emissions accounting and climate scenario analysis under TCFD frameworks require actual granularity on geographical exposure. A power generation company, food manufacturer, or chemical facility with Central European assets now needs stress-tested operational assumptions for summer 2024 onwards – not 2050. Insurance underwriting for these regions is already tightening.
The broader pattern across the continent – wildfires, droughts, and record temperatures in multiple countries simultaneously – also suggests that single-country climate adaptation plans are insufficient. Supply chain continuity depends on regional resilience, not just corporate ESG targets. Organisations operating across Europe should be pressure-testing their 2024 procurement and production schedules against extended heat events, not treating them as exceptional.
