IKEA Appoints Erika Intiso as Chief Sustainability Officer

Ingka Group, which operates more than 85% of IKEA's retail stores globally, appointed Erika Intiso as Chief Sustainability Officer. The move signals structural commitment to embedding sustainability into executive decision-making rather than treating it as a peripheral function. Intiso's appointment matters because C-suite ESG roles carry real budget control and board access—or they don't. Without clarity on reporting lines, board committee membership, and P&L responsibility, the title remains ceremonial. IKEA operates across furniture manufacturing, logistics, and retail, sectors with material supply-chain, waste, and labour exposure. The appointment alone tells us nothing about strategic priority. What does matter: whether this role has veto power over product sourcing decisions, sits on the executive committee, or merely coordinates compliance reporting. Ingka Group has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 across scopes 1 and 2, and science-based targets across scope 3 emissions—commitments that demand operational integration, not just messaging. A new CSO without teeth changes nothing. The question isn't whether IKEA appointed someone; it's whether that person can reshape how the business buys, makes, and ships furniture. That requires budget, authority, and board-level consequence. Time will show whether this hire represents genuine integration or another sustainability silo.
