Dassault Sets SBTi-Approved 2050 Net Zero Target

Dassault Systèmes, the French engineering software firm, has committed to a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved net zero target by 2050. This aligns the company's decarbonisation pathway with climate science consensus and places it within a defined credibility framework – SBTi approval signals third-party validation rather than unilateral corporate declaration.

The announcement matters because large software and technology companies operate across distributed supply chains and consume significant energy for data centres and operations. Scope 3 emissions – those from customers' use of their software, supply chain partners, and business travel – typically dominate tech firm inventories. Without detail on interim milestones (2030, 2035), verification standards, or scope coverage, a 2050 commitment alone remains a distant anchor point.

Dassault's move follows broader trend adoption among industrial software vendors. Whether this target includes full Scope 3 accounting, verification by external bodies year-on-year, or reduction versus carbon offsets remains the substance test. SBTi approval suggests rigour, but approval does not equal execution.
