Schneider Electric has spent $350 million acquiring AiDASH, a grid resilience provider that uses satellite data and AI to monitor power infrastructure. The deal signals a strategic pivot: major energy firms are now buying prediction tools rather than building them in-house.
AiDASH's technology monitors equipment degradation and predicts failures before they occur – a capability that matters more as grids face increasingly volatile weather patterns and higher demand from electrification. Satellite monitoring reduces the need for physical site visits, which cuts costs and deployment time.
But here's the harder question: does predictive maintenance on grid assets actually reduce emissions, or does it simply make existing infrastructure more efficient? There's a difference. Schneider Electric frames this as resilience (adaptation), not decarbonisation. That's honest.
The acquisition also reflects a broader market shift. Grid operators globally are under pressure to cut outage duration and frequency – not primarily for climate reasons, but because blackouts now carry economic and political costs. AI-powered monitoring addresses that. Whether it accelerates the transition to renewable energy, or merely sustains the current system longer, depends entirely on how utilities deploy it.
For procurement teams: this is a reminder that resilience and emissions reduction are separate goals. A supplier's climate commitments should specify which problem they're solving, and for whom.
