EcoVadis has opened its peer-to-peer sustainable supply chain networking platform to all suppliers, removing previous access restrictions. The move follows the company's established role as a business sustainability ratings provider – it issues environmental, social, and governance assessments used by procurement teams at large enterprises to evaluate supplier performance.
The platform expansion signals a shift in EcoVadis's business model. Previously, suppliers could access peer benchmarking and collaborative features only when invited by buyers already using EcoVadis assessments. Opening access to all suppliers, regardless of buyer relationship status, lowers barriers to entry and builds the user base horizontally.
For suppliers, the immediate benefit is visibility into competitive sustainability performance without requiring a formal assessment relationship first. Suppliers can benchmark their practices against peers, access guidance on improvement, and demonstrate progress to multiple buyers simultaneously – a material advantage for mid-market and smaller suppliers that serve multiple customers but lack resources for individualised sustainability programmes.
For buyers, a larger, more engaged supplier base increases the quality of ESG data available during vendor selection and contract negotiation. But the expansion also raises a pricing question: if platform access becomes a free or low-cost entry point, how does EcoVadis maintain revenue from its core assessment business? The answer likely lies in premium features, deeper analytics, or direct integration with buyer procurement systems.
The real test: whether open access translates to genuine supplier behaviour change or simply inflates platform metrics without shifting actual sustainability performance.
