Wildfires in Indonesian Borneo are closing in on Cabang Panti research station, home to one of the world's longest-running studies of wild apes. Fires have burned within 200 metres of the Rangkong satellite research station in Gunung Palung national park, forcing staff to work round the clock to protect the facility. Critically endangered Bornean orangutans are fleeing the forests as blazes spread.
This matters because Cabang Panti houses irreplaceable longitudinal data on wild orangutan behaviour, ecology, and population dynamics – research that underpins conservation strategy across Southeast Asia. The site's loss would be a genuine blow to primatology and to the evidence base for orangutan protection.
The fires reveal a harder truth about conservation research in climate-vulnerable regions: long-term field sites are now operating under acute physical threat, not just funding pressure. Equipment, archives, and ongoing data collection are all at risk when fire season intensifies.
For organisations working in biodiversity conservation or climate adaptation, this signals two things. First, field research infrastructure in fire-prone zones needs explicit resilience planning – backup data systems, evacuation protocols, and contingency funding. Second, the orangutan crisis is no longer abstractly about deforestation; it's about acute climate events outpacing the pace of human response.
The question for donors and governments is whether funding models for long-term ecological research adequately account for climate risk, or whether we're watching critical knowledge hubs become increasingly precarious.
